Health Care Proxy: Your Voice When You Cannot Speak.

Most people plan for death. Sophisticated planning also prepares for life—especially the moments when you cannot speak for yourself.

A health care proxy (sometimes called a durable power of attorney for health care) appoints a person you trust to make medical decisions for you if you are unable to make or communicate those decisions. Without this document, the people who love you most can be left without legal authority, and critical decisions can become delayed, uncertain, or disputed.

The value is not abstract. It is practical. If you are incapacitated—after an accident, during surgery complications, or in the midst of serious illness—your proxy is the person who can speak clearly with your medical team and carry out your wishes.

This is also one of the most effective tools for reducing family conflict. When your choice is documented, and your proxy understands your values, loved ones are not forced to guess or negotiate under pressure.

Choosing the right proxy matters. Select someone you trust without hesitation. Choose someone who can stay grounded under stress, communicate well with professionals, and advocate firmly when needed. Then have the conversation. Tell them what matters to you, what you would want in different scenarios, and what you would never want. The document is essential; its clarity is what makes it work.

We include health care decision-making documents in every estate plan we prepare because protection is not only financial. It is personal.
